Summer of Mercy
In August 1991, Dr. George Tiller's clinic was overrun with protesters from Operation Rescue, an anti-abortion group led by Rev. Keith Tucci. Tucci claimed it was God's voice who urged him to protest at the Women's Heath Care Services office. Dr. Tiller has become a huge target for anti-abortion protests because he is one of the few doctors in the country who will perform third trimester abortions. For 45 days, Tucci and 25,000 of his followers virtually held the clinic hostage. They blocked doors and tried to prevent clients from getting abortions. Over 2,700 people were arrested, pro-life and pro-choice alike. The group returned for a less successful "Summer of Mercy" in 2001.
